Toronto New Wave Film, Music & VR Festival
Curated by active filmmakers and artists, Toronto New Wave (TNW) represents the work of budding creatives of the highest caliber both locally and internationally. By providing a platform for new voices using new forms to tell new stories, the festival aims to be a catalyst for a new wave of social and political change.
TNW combines the cinematic experiences of watching films on the big screen, attending a live concert, and participating in an immersive VR experience. This cultivates a relationship between the film, music, and interactive communities and offers a unique, entertaining experience for audiences.
2019
In its third and final year (before the pandemic changed its trajectory), Toronto New Wave took its previous years' success and decided to replicate the formula, focusing on details and overall clarification of its messaging. The organization saw more efficiency and a streamlined process in 2019, including enhanced graphic design, larger support from previous sponsors, and highly reputable industry professionals as judges. AR (Augmented Reality) and XR (Experiential Reality) were introduced as a way to further build out the VR/Immersive Reality program. There was also a formal networking program that involved creating intimate connections between industry professionals and local artists.

2018
In its second year, TNW was officially incorporated as a not-for-profit and for the first time, received sponsorship support from organizations outside of itself. From a 70-attendee list in the last year to 350 this year, Toronto New Wave saw exponential growth both in its numbers as well as its cultural impact. In 2018, the VR/Immersive Reality program was introduced - the first of its kind in a Toronto film festival. This included bringing on major sponsors VRPlayin for an interactive VR segment, ContraverseVR for a synchronized VR theatre experience, and Igloo Vision for a 360 video projection dome. The festival also incorporated international work this year, mainly due to limited VR work being created in Canada and as a means to inspire local creators of the possibilities of VR/Immersive storytelling.

2017
TNW started off as a grassroots film & music event with the purpose of showcasing the work of emerging artists in local Toronto. Founded by a group of 3 filmmaker friends, it launched in 2017 and presented 5 films and 3 musical acts to a small audience at Cinecycle. It also sold $5 beers & ciders. This was its humble kickoff.
